Sooke’s Fire Chief Steven Soren tweeted out his appreciations today. “Thanks to
#sooke #RCMP assistance a fast moving grass fire on Townsend Rd. kept from spreading. #communityhero’s.”
Responses on social media (“Sooke Traffic Reports and Discussion,” a closed group on Facebook) noted that it happened in the grassy area behind Mai Mai’s and Shoppers Drug Mart, an area that has furniture and various other bits of garbage stewn about.
The person who called it in said that the couch had been set on fire.
By all accounts, the response was swift and effective.
Just a reminder that parts of Sooke have a fire rating of extreme, and fires will be a very real danger this summer. That is heightened by forecasted drought conditions for the duration of the summer. See the previous stories referenced in the section below.
