Is Sooke mayor Maja Tait’s personal life public domain? — 31 Comments

  1. Why not ? She is our Mayor and I am sure many people are questioning what she will do once the baby comes … Some people just have to find fault in anything others do ….. I am so happy for her and like she said in a news interview yesterday .. This will give her personal accounts of what Sooke needs for families …

  2. It is wonderful to celebrate the upcoming addition and it provides an opportunity to let the citizens of Sooke know our Mayor will be continuing in her role. Pooh hoo on anyone that cannot find joy in this event.

  3. When Mayors Frank Leonard and Stew Young became fathers it was not even mentioned. And if you think she will really be off, I highly doubt it. I’m off with a broken ankle and have had phone calls and people come to my home for meetings re council business (as well as reading reports to keep up and emails, texts, etc)

  4. Um actually she said in her campaign she had no intention of being a full time Mayor. Does this mean now not only do we have a part time Mayor but she is going on maternity leave? Proud to say I voted for Herb Haldane. Sooke would be in a much better place if he was Mayor.

    • That thought crossed my mind too, and I struggled with it. How do you cover the intricacies of gender without discussing gender? Mayor Milne took time off too, several times, and he appointed counsellors to represent him at functions and in meetings. That was never a news item. But, yes, I appreciate the irony, as you so wisely point out in your comment, as I am still leveraging her pregnancy to express this opinion. -Britt

  5. mmm….. a bit of a negative slant on a positive event methinks.

I feel that mayor Tait did the correct thing making such an announcement. For sure it will stop the local rumour mongers from having a field day. It’s very common these days for people to announce their pregnancy all over social media, yet nobody is picking up on that as not being a good idea. Our Mayor, on the other hand, made a couple of well structured short announcements and got on with her mayoral duties. Can’t ask for more than that.

If the media want to go wild about it and put Mayor Tait and Sooke more firmly on the media radar, in a positive light, then bring it on I say! After all, if the Mayor of Sooke has chosen to raise a family in Sooke what better statement does that make to other families thinking of moving to the area?

    Go Maja!

  6. Is Sooke mayor Maja Tait’s personal life public domain?

Yes! If mayor Tait herself chooses it to make it that way.

  7. Business as usually. Previous mayors have taken time off, months worth, and mayors in other municipalities have become mothers/fathers while in office. No one can honestly think this is the first time it’s happened, right? It will be business as usual.

    • As per the actual question on if it’s worthy of a headline. Yes, I think so. Front page of the TC two days later? No, it was obviously a slow news day. Really slow.

    Go Maja!

  9. P.>S. On CBC RADIO (The CURRENT-) – there was a program/discussion on the importance of breast -feeding one’s baby — What, breast=feeding your baby, means: it (via the Mom) has important nutrients that allows the Spirit/Mind/Body soul of the Intelligent Entity to continue it’s body formation (good bacteria in the the Intestines — )) Anyhow, maybe, Mayor Maja will keep on serving not just the community of Sooke, but breast-feed her/their baby with nutrition at the CouNCIL MEETINGS.

  10. Maja Tweeted the Times Colonist Article herself, which really seemed to me like she wanted to share her news. As small town it seems only right to say congratulations. Agree it’s not an issue, but also I think it’s important to follow her lead .

  11. If people want to read about it then it should…people seem to treat pregnant women like public property whether they’re ‘famous’ or not…personally I’m excited for her.

  12. Public office, public figure, public information. All part of being mayor. She announced it, so she wanted it public information. Except that she’s having a baby (which is great), what’s the big deal? As far as maternity leave, we have councillors that can take turns being acting Mayor’s. All of this is up to Mayor and Council. Congratulations Are in order!
