The Capital Regional District’s (CRD) Active and Safe Routes to School program is launching the inaugural Walk and Wheel to School Week today.
Among the local schools participating are Sooke Elementary and Journey Middle School. If your Sooke school is participating, you can Register your school for Walk and Wheel to School so the CRD knows you are participating; upon registering, they can send you a campaign package filled with giveaways, trip tracking materials and information and resources.
From October 2 to 6, participating schools will provide activities to encourage students and their families to choose active travel for their commute to school. Celebration stations will also pop-up throughout the week at various locations to cheer on participants.
Twenty-four schools and four school districts from across the capital region have registered for the program which aims to support year-round active school travel. Participating schools received active travel-tracking posters, stickers, guidebooks and resources to support their efforts. Each day a student walks or wheels (bus, bike, skate or scoot) part or all the way to school, they will receive a sticker to put on their trip-tracking poster. At the end of the campaign, schools will share their travel data with the CRD and be entered to win prizes.
Active transportation builds physical activity into kids’ daily routine which can support in-class concentration and mental well-being. It also reduces traffic volumes and congestion. By encouraging and supporting the use of active travel for the journey to and from school, the CRD and its partners are promoting physical activity, a sense of belonging, safer streets, environmental stewardship and improved overall community health.
Walk and Wheel to School Week is a project of the CRD Active Transportation and Healthy Communities program, offered with support from Island Health. For more information about ‘Walk and Wheel to School Week’, visit: www.crdwalkwheel.ca.
Since you’re here, we have a small favour to ask.
At 1.7 million page views over the past year, more people than ever are reading SPN. We had hoped advertising local services and events would sustain this service, but that has not come to pass. Advertising revenues are falling; status quo is unsustainable. Readers, please consider a small monthly donation. This can help secure the future of SPN. Business owners: Please consider an ad. More than massive local exposure, you will also be affiliated with an independent business that is 100% local, 99% paperless, and highly valued by the 98%. That’s priceless.
Thank you for your continued readership.
