Council met briefly on July 24 to discuss a few matters.
There was a request of Council from Staff Sgt. Jeff McArthur to “approve an amount up to $500 from the RCMP budget for accommodation costs to cover the cost of an outdoor grill for community/public education events as well as staff use.” Funds would come from Council Contingency. The motion was made for $500. Carried.
Staff Sgt. also provided a verbal update.
Staffing: Sooke RCMP have a total allotment for 16 RCMP, which includes the latest addition to the force. They currently have two vacancies currently, and one officer has been helping out with the Interior fires. This has left them with a total crew of 13 members.
Workload: The file load is the same as last year’s.
Neighbourhood Watch: A Neighbour Watch Program is being facilitated by Constable Sam Haldane. Three chapters are already up and operating, and another four are currently being organized.
Additionally, based on questions from Council, McArther made the following observations:
- Horgan, as the Premier, will now have his own body guard group so his coming to Sooke won’t cost the District any extra.
- McArthur noted that there are no extra resources to manage District parking, traffic violations and bylaw enforcement.
- The opioid epidemic has touched Sooke. A report will be forthcoming.
