A Sooke-initiated start-up was recently featured on Dragons Den. The roots of DeeBee’s Organics started in Sooke, through local entrepreneur D’Arcy Ladret.
D’Arcy Ladret grew up in Sooke and graduated from EMCS. His apprenticeship training at the Sooke Harbor House as served him well in his current role as the Quality Assurance and Product Development Manager for DeeBee’s SpecialTea Foods in Esquimalt.
D’Arcy started dishwashing at Mom’s Cafe when he was a youngster. Then, he moved to the Sooke Harbor House to dishwasher as well. This marked the beginning of his rewarding career in foodservice. Soon, he was training as a chef.
When asked about his source of inspiration and early role models, without hesitation, “The Philips,” D’Arcy comments, referring to Frederique and Sinclair of the Sooke Harbour House. “They were crucial to my development as a chef.”
Furthermore, he explains, “My training has come full circle as I am infusing botanticals into desserts. This is what I did at Sooke Harbor House – going out to the garden to pick herbs and infuse them into our dishes.
“We always had to Sooke-ify our dishes by infusing herbs and edible plants and flowers. It was that core value clean eating that brought me to where I am today and inspires me in my role at DeeBee’s.”
While D’Arcy is a chef by nature, he combines his love of cooking with food science in creating new products. It’s not rocket science, however — DeeBee’s TeaPopsTM are skillfully crafted by D’Arcy based on the input from founder and research scientist Dr. Dionne Laslo-Baker (who has completed years of in-depth study into the effects of chemicals on fetal development), and her husband Dr. Stephen Baker (a respected Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic surgeon). D’Arcy plays a key role and directs product development. He formulates recipes for the TeaPops, and recently launched four new flavors. One of these are the new Pink Lemonade TeaPops (pictured). Currently he is innovating even more new products, including those for diabetics.
While D’Arcy doesn’t live in Sooke currently, he often visits his old stomping ground. Recently, he spent his anniversary in Sooke.
DeeBee’s is can be purchased at Western Foods in Sooke. D’Arcy is hoping to see them in the Village Food Market and in local restaurants soon as well.
New Team Member Becky Julseth, Craft Beer Entrepreneur
Another key team member to join DeeBee’s recently is Becky Julseth, who will play a role as a business development and marketing director. She is the cofounder of Saltspring Island Ales, and is enjoying a recent exit as she sold this business on. Saltspring Island was able to target women for its ales, and Becky was the marketing genius behind this strategy. Since DeeBee’s TeaPops marketing strategy is targeted at women consumers, Becky’s expertise is the perfect fit.
