514 new BC COVID-19 cases and 5 deaths in BC, January 29, 2021
Since yesterday, there have been 514 more diagnosed COVID-19 cases in B.C., and about 7,000 cases being actively monitored.
Case Counts:
- Total cases in B.C. since the pandemic began: 66,779. Of the new cases, the breakdown is as follows:
- Vancouver Coastal Health: 134 new cases
- Fraser Health: 2238 new cases
- Island Health: 29 new cases
- Interior Health: 71 new cases
- Northern Health: 57 new cases
- Active cases: 4,557 (previously 4,455)
- Hospitalized cases: 292 (previously 291)
- Intensive care: 74 (previously 75)
- 5 new deaths (total 1,189)
- Recovered: 59,551 (previously 59,141)
- Suspected Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children or MIS-C: 16
- 124,979 people have received their first vaccine dose in BC, and 4,262 have received their second dose.
There is no Pfizer vaccine coming next week, and the Moderna order has been reduced by about 20% according to provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry. A bit of good news: all long-term care residents and workers have been offered vaccines.
Dr. Henry appeared to struggle with emotions at today’s press conference. Later reference was made by Health Minister Adrian Dix referencing a case in Northwest BC (Kitimat and Terrace region) where a child died. Dix emphatically added that there is no room for racism in today’s world, that it is unacceptable, full stop. It’s been a year now, with an end in sight but not close enough. Henry rightly noted that everyone is living with “unrelenting uncertainty.” It’s not forever, but it is for now and it is very present in all our lives right now.
On doing more, Dix noted that there are some people who need to do more. (Henry has been under attack for calling on people to do more.) Thanks to everyone who is giving what they can to the cause of stopping transmission.
B.C. continues with very little transmission in schools.
