Sooke Fire responded to a late afternoon call on Helgeson Road, where an abandoned barn caught on fire. SPN spoke with the gentleman who called it in; he said the barn went down pretty quick. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but the RCMP suspect it might be arson. Fires don’t start themselves, said the RCMP officer we spoke with.

Because there are no fire hydrants in the area, water had to be pumped in. The fire is contained, and no other structures are threatened.
There might be a lingering smell of smoke wafting over Sooke for the next little while. The structure that caught on fire was beyond the end of the road of Helgeson, going east from Church beyond the end of the road.SPN photos
