The Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the completion of its 2017/2018 Action Plan. The plan outlines actionable steps for the Chamber to realize its vision of Sooke as a planned and prosperous community while maintaining the lifestyle and values that we all love. With the success of our members and the business community at the heart of all our decisions, the Action Plan will focus on four central pillars: Events, Economic Development, Workforce Development and Community Collaboration.
The Chamber will be hosting the first ever Wild Coast Expo on April 7-8, 2018 at SEAPARC Leisure Complex. The two-day outdoor recreation tradeshow will feature speakers, workshops, gear testing, and excursions. The event website will be launched by the end of August with special member rates vendor participation.
Other upcoming events include:
- The Special Joint Business Community and Newcomers Club Mixer on August 10,
- The 15 Annual Golf Tournament on September 14,
- A Four-Chamber Mixer at Camosun College on September 21,
- The Annual General Meeting in November, and
- The All Sooke Staff Party in December.
The Chamber is heading into its 70th year with a revitalization of its branding and approach, improving the value of membership with renewed focus on tourism-led economic development. As part of its re-branding, the Board of Directors is not only working with students and faculty in the RRU Tourism Management program to create a fresh, cohesive, and inclusive brand for the Chamber, but it is also reviewing all its administrative policies and procedures, building a new website, and updating all marketing materials.
To address membership value, the Chamber will soon be offering a monthly payment plan for membership dues. A monthly membership plan offers convenience for both members and staff. The Chamber will add further value to members by increasing its focus on workforce training to help business owners and their employees. Lastly, we will continue to build new partnerships with businesses to offer discount rates on products and services as well as partner with other regional organisations to support events and boost opportunities for collaboration.
“We are all very excited about the future of the Chamber,” says President Kerry Cavers. “We have received a lot of positive feedback about the changes that we have implemented over the last year. It has been a great deal of hard work but it really has only just begun. It’s a bit like the iceberg analogy. Many of the strides we have made are operational or long-game projects. 2018 is going to be a big year for the Chamber and the local business community. Next year is when much of our progress comes to the surface and the impact on the community will be easily visible.”
Want to be part of the excitement and positively impact the business community? The Chamber is actively seeking new board members for the balance of 2017 and for 2018. Chamber members interested in taking a leadership role in the economic growth of the Sooke Region are strongly encouraged to contact Chamber President Kerry Cavers for more information. As always, the Chamber welcomes community and member input. Members of the Chamber and the public are invited to call 250-642-6112, email us, or visit us at the Chamber office to offer feedback or suggestions.
