You never know when some tidbit of wisdom will flutter into your life. Often the most salient advice comes when you least expect it. Like after you’ve dyed your hair orange. I just did this. Last week. Yep. Tried for blond. Came out orange. Lucky for me I have a stylist who understands my hard-headed tenancy to try things myself.
Enter Toni. Karma Salon’s saucy young stylist with an eye for colour, and a sharp pair of scissors. The first time I sat in her chair, I explained that I didn’t really want a fancy hairstyle. I have no talent when it comes to doing my hair. Ponytail, anyone? I just wanted something I could shampoo and leave alone. “No problem,” she said. “But first we’ll have to correct and redirect”.
Correct and redirect? What am I, a navigational chart? But think about it, it’s brilliant! How often in my life could I have used Toni’s advice and spared myself pain – physical, mental, AND financial? My mind was going 100 kms/hr! I almost forgot what she was doing to my hair.[sam id=”15″ codes=”true”]I can’t even count the number of times I’ve gotten deep into a training program, only to have life intervene. I’d have to skip a long run. Then I’d miss a weight workout. Finally, I’d need to take just a few more days off for one reason or another. Next thing I knew – the scale was up eight lbs and I hasn’t lifted a weight in a month.
Six months ago while training for Bear Mountain (Canada’s most difficult 10kms)…I’d push through, kept training no matter what. And I ended up injured and discouraged, after burning the candle at both ends. Now, I correct and redirect. I don’t just ignore the missed days. I openly acknowledge the fact that my training doesn’t always control my life. Sometimes, my life controls my training. But that doesn’t mean I completely throw in the towel.
Things happen. My life happens. And the odd thing is, now that I’ve admitted life is not just free will but a bit of fate and a ton of ironic laughter…things are falling into place.
Correct and redirect. Make the adjustment and don’t set your agenda in stone. I’m not sure why it’s taken me so long to learn this simple lesson, or why I was ever convinced that a training schedule that makes sense today will make sense 3 months from now.
There is a balance, something I’ve never been super good at. To excel in any sport requires a certain degree of discipline and dedication to achieve your goals. (Maybe I’m onto something in other parts of my life!). Every day I’m amazing myself, finding the persistence to work through the discouragement (it’d be SO MUCH EASIER to just live on a steady diet of McDonald’s, beer, and lifestyle related disease) and setbacks (late nights with sick kids doesn’t bring sugar- coated mornings).
The best lesson I can bestow on you that I’ve learned this January – You have to be able to acknowledge that sometimes…through no fault of your own…even the best of plans must be broken.
And that’s why I took today off the gym, but will double up on cardio tomorrow.
