Cougar spotted in East Sooke
WildSafe BC issued this alert on January 30, 2016, and was posted by Wild Wise Sooke (Facebook, see link below)
CITY / LOCALITY: EAST SOOKE, Seagirt Rd
DATE & TIME: 2016-01-30 09:49:11
ENCOUNTER TYPE: LIVESTOCK/PETS – KILLED/INJURED
ATTRACTANT: PETS
ABOUT THE SPECIES: Watch cougar video (below). Cougars are the largest of Canada’s three wild cats and are formidable hunters. Strictly carnivorous, cougars prey primarily on deer but will also hunt other ungulates and smaller mammals when the opportunity presents itself. Young cougars stay with their mothers for up to two years but otherwise, these cats are solitary creatures. Cougars tend to be very secretive and are rarely seen by people.
Pets left out of doors, especially at night are easy prey for a passing cougar.
