The following funds were awarded:
Sooke-a-rama Booth hosted by the Sooke Lion’s, sponsorship $2,000. Mayor noted the funds could come from the District’s Sponsorship Fund, and while would deplete the fund, this is a pretty substantial community event. It would get the District a booth at the event, where they could engage with residents and businesses in Sooke. Moved by Logins to sponsor for the full $2,000, seconded by Bateman. Carried unanimously. Note: Counc. Beddows, who is a Lion, recused himself from this conversation.
Sooke Saltwater Series $1,500 – Mayor Tait noted Sooke has sponsored this event for a few years. Counc. Logins asked about last year’s contribution, staff noted they received $2,500 in 2018, and $1,500 in 2017. Counc. Logins noted the fishing industry is challenged right now, and supporting this freshwater event would be money well spent. Mayor Tait noted the delegation asked for $3,000. Carried unanimously.
Food CHI $1,200 – Counc. Beddow moved seconded by Counc. St-Pierre. Staff noted that this would come from Council Contingency. Carried unanimously. Note: Counc. Bateman, who is involved with Food CHI, recused himself from this conversation.
Wounded Warriors Run $1,000 – Counc. Beddows made the motion, seconded by someone very important (we didn’t hear who) , funds from Council contingency. Carried unanimously.
Film Commission $2,000 sponsorship, that would get them a membership. The movie Elsewhere stimulated the local economy. Mayor Tait believes this membership is good value, driving more visitors and tourists to Sooke: Motion from Beddows for $2,000 carried unan.
Council also received a request from EMCS Society for seat upgrades, for $40,000. Mayor Tait noted that this parallels what Langford is donating to their community Theater. Counc. Beddows took issue with this type of money being spent. He asked for a postponement at this time, until Sept 1. Council will ask for additional budget and fundraising information from EMCS. A motion was made by Counc. Beddows to postpone, seconded by Counc. McMath. Carried unanimously. Note: Counc. Bateman and Counc. Logins both recused themselves from this conversation.
It should be noted that these funds come from existing budgets.
Elected officials present: Mayor Maja Tait, and Councillors Jeff Bateman, Al Beddows, Ebony Logins, Megan McMath,
Brenda Parkinson, Tony St-Pierre.
