I feel like I have always been identified by my job and I am about to retire. What do I do next?
Retiree In Training
Dear Retiree In Training:
Many people identify themselves by the work they do. When they are about to retire, they suddenly realize that they have put their interests, hobbies and other things aside, because their job, became the number 1 priority.
Getting ready for retirement can be a very exciting thing and it can be scary. What do I do? Who will I be as a retired person? Will I be needed? Will I still have value?
To prepare for retirement, you may want to start a few months before the actual day.
What you don’t want to have happen is that you sit on the couch, read a book, complain about the weather. When you retire, and you don’t have some kind of a plan for your future, you might become depressed.
So the best thing to do is to make a list of the things you have never done, but have always wanted to try.
Make the list as long as you want it to be, and explore 2 or 3 of those things. Whether you join a meetup group, take a class, or use YouTube to learn about something new, the choices are unlimited as to what you can get into.
If something doesn’t resonate, or you feel like you are no longer interested in it, move on to another item on your list. Either way, get yourself out there, ask friends to join you in your new-found hobby, and go have some fun. That’s what retirement is all about.
Smiles across the miles,
