Did you hear today’s blast?
We at Sooke PocketNews received notice from Joe Munn, Operations Manager at Esterline, notifying us that they did detonate a blast this morning.
Did anyone hear or feel it?
Esterline (Pacific Aerospace) does seem genuinely interested in minimize their environment impact, and they welcome input from our community.
“Let me know please because it will help us too.”
Mr. Munn added that weather conditions heavily impact what is felt and heard hear.
“The weather conditions play a big roll if you hear them or not,” he elaborated in his email. “The last two weeks had lots of low heavy cloud cover and heavy rain, the worse conditions. We had no choice but to shoot during these unfavorable conditions.”
This morning some of the cloud cover had lifted, giving us some sun and some cloud.
Estserline does try and blast when weather conditions are optimal, though nature does what she does and sometimes optimal is not optional.
Comment below or on our Facebook page and we will track the comments and share them with our neighbours to the south.

get used to it its not the end of the world, next week is another week
Hi Britt. I experienced the ‘booms’ in Shirley, both inside and out. The ones inside were always strongest and often shook the windows, glass cabinets, and knocked Christmas cards off the mantle. Outside, it was more of a sound than something you would feel. In fact, the eagle in the tree was never disturbed, and a deer continued to feed. Experiencing it from inside the house was quite unsettling, to say the least. They lasted anywhere from 3-8 seconds and are the closest thing to an earthquake that I have experienced.
So glad you were able to break the story on this, and give peace to so many area residents. I heard it first on the Sooke Pocket News!
Can’t say I “broke the story;” credit for that goes to former Mirror reporter (and excellent ongoing journalist), Shannon Moneo, who published a letter in the Mirror (“Mystery solved,” March 4, 2015). However, I’ll take the credit for sticking with it! Another update is in the works. Stay tuned!

Totally sunny and nice today… earth still shook in Otter Point. I’m not buying the weather bit! 🙂
