With the following post on Facebook, CRD JdF Director Mike Hicks is encouraging people to respond to a feedback call.
“Here is a chart illustrating a proposed fin fish closure by DFO. Please take a moment and respond on the link below with your feedback,” writes Hicks in his post (see below). “I have expressed my opinion that our Southern Vancouver Island Coastal Communities, recreational fishers and commercial fishers will be devastated. Never thought I would see this day!”
DFO and the PCA are seeking feedback on section 7 of the draft Amended Recovery Strategy for Northern and Southern Resident Killer Whales.
The deadline for submissions is July 11th, 2018
See their Discussion Guide here, and then provide your comments on section 7 of the draft Amended Recovery Strategy by completing this online comment form to provide feedback.
After they have received your feedback and finalized the draft Amended Recovery Strategy, a proposed document will be posted to the SARA Public Registry for a 60-day public comment period. The Government will then have 30 days to incorporate comments before posting the final document on the Species at Risk Public Registry.
In addition, the Chamber of Commerce in Port Renfrew (via Dan Hager) distributed the following message:
THE FEDERAL DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES AND OCEANS (The D.F.O.) HAS TABLED A PROPOSAL THAT WILL DRAMATICALLY AFFECT THE SPORT FISHING INDUSTRY IN PORT RENFREW. IN SHORT, IF THE DFO PROCEEDS TO ACT ON THE PROPOSAL AS TABLED THE AREA WHERE OUR SPORT FISHERS CAN FISH WILL BE REDUCED TO 10% OF ITS CURRENT SIZE.
A considerable effort is being lead by our Chamber to assemble the business communities in Uclulet, Tofino, Bamfield and Port Alberni with Port Renfrew as well as our Premier and M.L.A. John Horgan and our M.P. Alistair MacGregor to be sure our Communities are heard and that the DFO, at the very least postpone any decision that they at this point, will make on July 11, 2018 without any direct consultation from the affected communities. We will also be approaching the media to give more exposure to the implications of this unilateral decision should it proceed.
The B.C. Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Victoria have already stepped up to support our collective voices.
I kindly ask you to take the time and visit the DFO website here:
And provide your response to each of the questions posed on the website.
Here below is how our Chamber Directors will be responding to the questions on the DFO website and the contact information that will be supplied.
We encourage all Chamber Members to do the same or somehow provide your response asking the DFO to, at the very least provide appropriate time for the stakeholders most affected by this proposal the time to respond when they are not also in their busiest time of year.
ACT NOW PLEASE!
1. Question 1. Answer :We have not been directly consulted.
2. Question 2. Answer: The decision to close sports fishing at Swiftsure Bank will absolutely without question devastate our community.
3. Question 3. Answer: Allowing only 10 days in the busiest time of year is not the appropriate time or enough time to request feedback on this issue. We demand the proper consultation at an appropriate time of year.

Everyone in Port Renfrew and the other west coast communities need to inundate this website with this same response. We need to be united in the messaging and demand DFO consult with our communities. A letter will be crafted as well but there is no time for delay on this.
