An early morning fire at the apartment building on Grant Rd was attended by more than 35 fire fighters.
“Over 35 firefighters on scene in Sooke at a large structure fire – crews from Sooke, Otter Point, Metchosin, Langford & East Sooke” posted Metchosin’s fire chief Stephanie Dunlop.
Sooke fire chief Steven Sorensen tweeted that the cause of the fire is under investigation.
“Damage is extensive. Approximately 25 apartment units evacuated to community hall,” posted Sorensen. All the residents of the apartment building were displaced. “Significant damage to some suites in apartment bldg fire in
#sooke. Many units saved with light smoke damage. Occupants under care of ESS”
Sorensen later updated that to say, “Great work by
#Sooke ESS volunteers looking after victims of today’s apartment fire. Many put up in local hotels.” ESS refers to Sooke’s Emergency Support Services.
The fire was successfully extinguished. No one was injured. UPDATED BY CHIEF SORENSEN at around 5 p.m. that same day: “Occupant of suite involved remains in hospital with serious smoke inhalation”
