On July 8th, 2019 at approximately 7:35 am the West Shore RCMP responded to a report of a female holding a handgun outside the 2000 block of Gourman Place. The female was with a male, and the two walked into Thetis Lake Regional Park.
The West Shore RCMP responded with a heavy police presence and began working their way into the park via the network of trails.
“Thetis Lake Regional Park is a huge area with lots of foot traffic and multiple off shooting trails,” said Cst. Nancy Saggar, Media Relations Officer, West Shore RCMP. “Our officers had a starting point of where the suspects were last seen but we needed to make sure the exits were covered. This required the coordination of numerous police officers at multiple places in and out of the park.
“To ensure both public and police safety the officers redirected hikers already in the park and prevented several park enthusiasts from entering the trails while they searched for the suspects. The suspects were located by our officers in the park at approximately 8:00 am. They were safely taken into custody and a handgun was seized from the male’s waistband. After the arrest was made officers examined the handgun and determined it was a replica. The two suspects were arrested and must appear in court. The investigation is on-going.”
This is not the first time West Shore RCMP officers have been called to a scene with a report of a gun that was later determined to be a replica. These situations present a real risk to both public and police safety.
If you are handling a firearm, real or otherwise, in a manner that presents a threat to public safety, the police will respond accordingly and you may find yourself arrested and the subject of a criminal investigation. Use caution when handling firearms and be mindful of the people and the perceptions around you.

(SPN comment: Worth observing that in other US news, a young white male in his twenties, showed up at a Missouri Walmart dressed in body armour and military fatigues, and carrying a rifle and handgun as well as more than 100 rounds of ammunition. Glad to be living where I live! -Britt / SPN)
