This past spring my daughter, Morgan Rayna, and I were sitting and talking when I got a notification on my phone about a new post on Facebook. The post was from Amber Academy Youth Fine Arts society.
The post shared an image of a young lady named Lily Lecinana, with a GoFundMe Link, and said this:
“This little firecracker is one of our community’s own delightful young performers. Lily was one of our lead characters in last year’s spring production of ‘Fraggle Rock-a-Thon,’ sharing not only her natural acting skills with us but also her lovely voice and beautiful smile. This season, Lily went on to join the cast of Sooke Harbour Players in their Snow White pantomime where once again she was able to shine brightly on stage for our enjoyment.
Lily and her family need your support now. Please, donate if you can or share this campaign.”
We learned that Lily was in trouble…serious trouble. Lily had been sent to B.C. Children’s Hospital to battle Stage Four Burkett’s Lymphoma. Cancer…the plague of our time, and worst of all, cancer that was trying to claim the life of a precious child. Lily’s family would have to join her at the hospital, to support her, but also to spend every possible moment they could with her. So they would have to try and live two lives, maintaining hearth and home here in Sooke, but also paying the price of survival in Vancouver, a place that Lily had to remain in to have any hope at all. Obviously Lily’s family needs to be with her, as any of us would if it were our own children, but the price is a terrible burden. Lily’s battle is on, and her family is fighting it with her, God bless them.
In showing the post to Morgan, we realized that she had performed alongside our daughter, and remembered her enthusiasm and energy. Lily was always happy, always ready to encourage others, and always so ready to share her energy and lend courage to the other kids. Morgan immediately said that she wished we could do something to help Lily, and help her family. But what could we do? We wanted to share more.
What about a concert? A benefit, where we could generate the funds needed to help Lily, and help her family help Lily in her fight? Morgan wondered if it was possible to stage a benefit concert, drawing local talent and performers from outside of Sooke, to stage a benefit that would generate the funds desperately needed to help Lily and her family carry on. If we couldn’t be there with Lily, couldn’t we help her family to be there?
Sooke is a wonderful community. We quickly realized when we came here nine years ago that the community was tightly knit, and that people here care about one another. We saw it time and again, through devastating events like the Grant Road fire, to public events, concerts, and community activities, we saw Sooke come together as a community like no other place we had ever been. And we believe that Sooke could do it again for Lily.
Morgan Rayna wanted to sing, and we found other local artists, such as Taylor Caspersen, that also wanted to help. We found organizers that also thought it would be a great idea. Our next step was to contact Lily’s family to see if they would approve of a staged benefit in Lily’s name to help fundraise for her. In reaching out to Lily’s mom, Meredith Lecinana, her response was full of love and gratitude, and she gladly embraced the support of our community. We
approached Facebook, who also endorsed the creation of a page dedicated to Lily’s concert.
So far, so good! We have secured a generously provided venue within our community!
We already have some amazing artists. With a great deal of interest even from outside of Sooke. We do, however, need more volunteers to help with all facets of a staged concert. The venue will have a bar, concessions, and even a silent auction, and with a DJ supported dance to follow the performers! 100% of proceeds will be directed to Lily and her family.
