BEST MOM EVER!!! I am still in shock in what I watched this morning!
When I arrived at the Panama flats I noticed a very cute bunch of Mallard ducklings with their mom, 11 in all. After a few shots, I went along and photographed a bunch of other birds.
As I was watching the Blackbirds all of a sudden all the ducks started to fly which means only one thing … EAGLE! I then realized in the middle of the pond was the poor mom and her babies. I understand the circle of life but I could not believe what was going to happen.
The Eagle sees the Ducklings, circles back, and crashes into the water in the middle of them all.
Mom starts going crazy, the eagle tries twice to land on a baby but misses. He finally decides to go after her.
She flaps and quacks and he takes the bait, talons out he sets his sight on her.
I watch as he chases after her and they disappear. She sacrificed her life for her babies.
All is quiet except for the peeping of 11 little souls floating in a circle looking for mom.
At this point, I am crying (yah not professional) as I wonder what will happen to these abandoned babies.
Then I see her it’s the MOM! She outmaneuvered the EAGLE!! She is alive!
She lands at the babies and starts to quack instructions to hurry up and get off the pond. They paddle quickly toward the tall grass and as the last one (yes I counted all 11 were there) the Eagle comes over the horizon.
I am standing near the ducks and I see the eagle soar over my head looking for the family. I look up and say to him “NOT TODAY EAGLE NOT TODAY!” but of course tomorrow is another day… And that is my Happy Ending Disney Story!
