MYSTERY SOLVED: See this article…. Original post: Sooke PocketNews received a call this morning informing us of a random act of idiocy. This one has us stumped. Why would anyone want to remove the telescope and the hands that held it from Sooke’s “Mariner Man” statue (situated at the parking lot on Murray Rd at Horne)? It might have happened earlier, we don’t know. But we do know that right now, this is how the statue looks.
About the “Mariner Man” from the District’s Community in Bloom Participant 2014 Profile Book:
The Mariner Man: A 2010 Legacy project awarded to the Sooke Region Museum in 2009 has been applied to the creation of an installation at the Murray Road entrance to the Marine Boardwalk. The “Mariner Man” celebrates the strong connection the Sooke region had with the ocean. The statue of a mariner viewing the Sooke waters through a telescope is surrounded by a planter with water feature and interpretative signs.
No longer celebratory, now he’s just looking forlorn and without purpose.
Anyway, if you happen to see some out-of-context statuesque hands holding a telescope, consider notifying the Sooke RCMP, 250-642-5241.
