Yep, that’s the word that first comes to mind so that’s the word I’m gonna use. I could also use fabulous, brilliant, awesome and many more descriptors but I think you know what I mean. In other words, Sooke Community Choir, you killed it.
That’s the opinion of this audience member and, if the standing ovation and demand for an encore is anything to go by, it might also be the feeling of many others who attended the Friday night performance of #modernlove. It truly was a most satisfying evening of beautiful songs, upbeat fun and lots of favorite tunes.
The happy familiarity of Stevie Wonder with “Isn’t She Lovely’ set the pace for the evening. Then the raucous “Love Shack” with its three amazing soloists got the crowd fired up and eager for the rest of the show. As the performance went on, there were so many more gorgeous arrangements. One of these, Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven” brought many to gulping, eye-watering moments of emotion. Then, brilliantly, just when the audience was pensive and thoughtful, we got a serious taste of what it is to experience first-hand the state of “Uptown Funk”. Rock on! At that point, wide-spread foot-stomping, singing along and clapping began with buckets of enthusiasm and smiles.
And no review would be complete without mentioning the amazing technique of the man behind it all, Bruce (Shakespeare?) Ruddell, seriously talented musicians, Kathy Russell and Jeff Poynter and the costumes which made the scene a delight. In total, #modernlove is a show not to be missed and yes, the total package is just glorious.
This is definitely a show you shouldn’t miss, so mark your calendars for the remaining performances on May 4, 2019 @ 7:30pm & May 5, 2019 @ 2:00pm in Sooke and May 11, 2019 3:00pm in Parksville. Enjoy the sounds and rhythms of some exciting #modernlove.
