The 15th Annual Music Monday celebrations are coming to Sooke again this year. Music Monday is the annual celebration of music education across Canada. This year’s anthem is “Hymn to Freedom”, written by Canadian Jazz Legend, Oscar Peterson.
On Monday, May 6 at 1 pm at the Evergreen Plaza, over 200 students from Sooke, Poirier, John Muir and Saseenos Elementary Schools will fill the skies with music.
Music Specialist Teachers Sandi Arts (Poirier), Rhys Pugh (Sooke), Giles Borland (John Muir) and Laurel Parliament (Saseenos) will bring their choirs/music classes. The choirs will be joined by singer-song-writer / School Bus Driver Gord Phillips.
All of the choirs will join in song and then tour around the local town core businesses doing a caroling route – sprinkling song throughout our seaside community.
Each of the schools will also celebrate Music Monday with an individual gathering in the morning – for example, whole school assemblies featuring student performances, local musicians, and indigenous performers.
We hope that you will join us on Music Monday in Sooke. As the anthem says, “When every voice joins in our song, and together singing harmony, that’s when we’ll be free.”
