–Sooke Region Volunteer Centre
Like you, we at the Sooke Region Volunteer Centre (SRVC) care about community, volunteers, costs and resources. With over 200 agencies serving the Sooke Region (Beecher Bay to Port Renfrew), it is clear that some level of coordination and sharing would be beneficial. The small but motivated SRVC team have been doing what they can for individuals and organizations since 2010. They’ve grown from a virtual centre to a part-time office for people to meet. SRVC has continued to mature through collaboration and team efforts and Marlene Barry has been a common thread throughout this process.
“It is time for a change in leadership,” says Barry, the retiring coordinator. “We are ready for new ideas and energy, and are is pleased to announce the hiring of Dawn Humphreys as the new part-time coordinator.”
Though new to Sooke, Humphreys is not new to volunteering. She has served on over 15 boards, with her volunteer experience ranging from youth and arts, to mental health and grant writing. Humphreys is excited to live in such a beautiful place, be near to family, and do what she loves best: community engagement and development.
“I can’t believe this opportunity of furthering community connection has been given to me!” says Humphreys. “I’m so excited, and have great ideas to share; but, I also want to meet everyone and find out where they are and what their ideas are first.”
Humphreys feels strongly that “We need our teens — if we can get that message out, we can show them, seriously show them, how to get where they want to go.” She is beginning to learn about the various groups with that focus, and looks forward to seeing how the Volunteer Centre and her skills can help.
“This is a great community. I love it here and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of getting the Volunteer Centre up and running,” says Barry. “I wish Dawn and the SRVC team all of the best in life and community. I will still be around just with a back seat view.”
