Hello Shirley and Jordan River,
This is an update on the fires burning near/in Shirley.
There are at least two fires causing smoke to come across Shirley. The more concerning fire is burning approximately 800m NE of West Coast Road, in the vicinity of the Priests Cabin. BC Forest Service have a crew working on this fire today, along with a helicopter in support. There is one property which is threatened, the property owner is aware and is taking action.
This fire is in an area that is inaccessible to us with structural fire trucks.
The houses along West Coast Road are not presently threatened. If this changes, we will advise individual home owners, as well as notifying the community. We are monitoring the situation closely.
The Fire located at Muir Creek Mainline (Boyd’s road) has a Timber West crew working on it, with heavy machinery in assistance. This fire is producing the smoke in Sheringham Estates. It is approximately 4 km NE of Highway 14, burning on the far side of one of the branches of Muir Creek.
The Fire Department recommends that all residents follow FireSmart planning throughout the year. Information can be found at:

Since you’re here, we have a small favour to ask.
At 1.7 million page views over the past year, more people than ever are reading SPN. We had hoped advertising local services and events would sustain this service, but that has not come to pass. Advertising revenues continue to fall; status quo is unsustainable.
- Readers: Please consider a small monthly donation. This can help secure the future of SPN.
- Business owners: Please consider an ad. More than massive local exposure, you will also be affiliated with an independent business that is 100% local, 99% paperless, and highly valued by the 98%. That’s priceless.
Thank you for your continued readership.
Or, you set the amount, one-time contribution.
Other options: Click here to make a $10 donation using SPN PayPal.me. (You can change the donation amount on the landing page by clicking on the dollar amount.) Don’t have or don’t like to use your credit card over Paypal? Electronic Fund Transfers work too, set up through online banking, to firstname.lastname@example.org. Don’t trust the internet, period?
