-Sooke Tennis and Pickleball Group
Our fledgling Sooke Tennis and Pickleball Group is offering local seniors and families an opportunity to come out to the Throup Road courts on June 24th, 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
Take part in free Tennis and introductory Pickleball instruction (including loaner paddles, racquets, & door prizes), and give your opinion to organizers on how you would like to see the Sooke Community Association courts upgraded.
Improvements to the courts will get underway in July with the help of our small district grant from Sooke Council for redoing the lines, adding Pickleball and new equipment to both courts. While tennis is still a popular sport, with a growing interest by youth, Pickleball is showing an explosion of interest on Vancouver Island, and indeed North America, particularly among seniors who use the low impact sport on the smaller court for fitness and socializing.
Our group is now actively seeking further funding of $30K to resurface both courts with colourful all-weather Plexi Paving before the line painting takes place. This will ensure the courts are safer to play on and will help to beautify the Art Morris Sports Park which continues to be maintained by volunteers.
The Throup Road courts are a valued community asset and will be an additional opportunity for another outdoor fitness activity that is affordable and fun for all ages and abilities.
To this end our organizers who’ve pushed this initiative forward, in partnership with the Sooke Community Association, hope to engage the broader community now in the decision-making process with the surveys (there’s a short and a long one) below.
