Currently, BC’s Family Day falls one week earlier that the Family Day elsewhere in Canada.
BC Premier Christy Clark said that BC residents were extensively polled before the date was first set five years ago, and their input determined the date.
A 2012 Vancouver Sun article reported “The tool collected 31,146 votes between May 8 and 22, with 18,202 votes for the second week, and 9,436 for the third week. The remaining votes did not state a preference for either week.” To clarify, “the tool” was not referring to a person.
When considering the February provincial holiday, of 31,146 BC responses:
- 58% preferred the second week
- 30% preferred the third week
- 11% had no preference
Currently, Alberta (since 1990), Saskatchewan (since 2007), and Ontario (since 2008) have a provincial Family Day that falls on the third Monday in February. In British Columbia, Family Day (since 2012) falls on the second Monday of February.
