The power went out in the town core of Sooke during the morning of Thursday, August 30, affecting 2936 hydro customers. It went off at about 9:36 a.m. and was restored by 11:13 a.m.
According to SPN reader Rod Holt, the power is out because of a flock of geese hitting a transformer.
“So power outage in Sooke… reason… a flock of Canada Geese were just taking off in front of Town Hall and one hit a transformer,” wrote Rod Holt on Facebook. “Goose let the magic smoke out of said transformer and now goose lies dead at the bottom of the pole at Otter Point Road. I called Hydro and let them know.”
BC Hydro confirms the cause, listed the cause as “bird contacting our wires.”
Drivers are reminded that when signal lights go out, intersections are to be treated as four-way stops, with priority given to pedestrians.
