Poll: The roadsides beds in uptown Sooke have been filled with rocks. What do you think? — 30 Comments

  1. Well I know they can’t water the grass… maybe Mike Hicks will have some left over artificial grass that he can lone to Sooke.

  2. Ugly. They aren’t even nice rocks. When they get kicked onto the road, they will become a hazard.

  3. It’s not done yet! Some larger rocks and boulders will be added, and native (blue-toned) beach grass will be planted within the rock. It will be low maintenance and “beachy”. Tying into Sooke’s “Where the Rainforest Meets the Sea” theme. The boulevards have no irrigation, so plants would have a very difficult time surviving.

  4. i think its a cheap look that could be used to vandalize ,also a hazard for falling rolling your ankles kids are going to be drawn to it and be even closer to the edge of the rd Sooke you paid for really good soil to what hide it with rocks what is wrong with that pic

    • Don’t argue with stupid, they’ll beat you with experience, besides you would never see a whiner with a watering can or pulling a weed.

      • A landscape with rocks and hardy grasses is going to survive with little expense or care. The rocks aren’t finished yet, either. I expect they will wash with rain and show better soon. Planning ahead would have made the process “neater”. All the grouching about trash and vandals–that is up to the community to solve, I think, and not the Sooke Council all on their own. Anyone can pick up trash or mention to litter bugs that there are lots of litter bins in town.

  6. First they were filled with dirt — then cleaned out and then filled with rocks…? The rocks are a hazard and a potential weapon for anyone wanting to throw rocks at cars or windows … plus not very appealing aesthetically. I also watched parts of the newly poured concrete lifted and redone due to cabling issues — I understand make work projects serve to increase a tax base but surely better planning could have been achieved on the whole project.

  7. the point is.. I want to know why they spent several days getting the boulevards filled with soil, then removed the soil with Vacuums and then spend the money to fill the beds with rock? Seems something amiss here with all our money! How much has this cost?

  8. So far looks mighty neat and ……sterile. Probably less expensive than beautiful rows of fairy landscape pink/magenta roses. Just wait until the weeds start growing up amongst the stones. Or will they do a light concrete fill between stones?

  9. Too early to really comment….but I was really looking forward to seeing some nice green plants. A similar idea at hillside mall in Victoria attracts garbage and all sorts of plastic etc. Looks good on paper but doesn’t translate well to reality I think. But we will see I guess. Better to think positive!

  10. I’m holding off my final assessment until it’s finished. But to be honest, I’m not as confident as I was about this new look and new start at Sooke ‘ core.

  11. maybe it will deter the J walkers, walking the Spit is a challenge to some people after rocks were used to refill the path

  12. I think the stones will be a hit! Particularly as people begin throwing them through store windows and at passing cars! Bad choice as far as I’m concerned!
