BC (February 7, 2020) – Sheringham Distillery Ltd. is pleased to announce that on Tuesday, February 4th, 2020 their Kazuki Gin spirit won both ‘Canadian Artisan Spirit of the Year’, aka ‘Best in Show’, as well as a Gold Medal at the Canadian Artisan Spirit Competition. Facing intense competition from over 60 other distilleries from across all provinces as well as the Yukon Territories, their Kazuki Gin bested all other spirits in all categories, whether gin or whisky, rum or liqueur, to notch the grand prize.
Sheringham’s Kazuki Gin is created using British Columbian grain for its base spirit, as well as a mix of botanicals locally sourced from Vancouver Island and around the world. This gin is truly a mix of Western and Eastern cultures and botanicals, featuring cherry blossom petals that are carefully hand-cut from the trees and yuzu citrus peel, both from Kyoto, Japan. Green tea leaves and flowers from Westholme Tea Farm in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, (one of only two tea farms in North America), provide local terroir excellence.
Co-Founder and Master Distiller Jason MacIsaac comments, “Once again I am honoured and thrilled accepting such a phenomenal CASC award. Kazuki Gin has always been the baby sister to Seaside Gin and it’s great seeing it shine and be recognized for its own uniqueness as well. It was long a dream of mine to create a second gin that was Asian inspired, featuring the best of both Western and Eastern cultures. It wasn’t until the addition of our partner Terence Fitzgerald who helped introduce these amazing Japanese flavours and botanicals from his travels there, did the recipe and flavour profile click for me. We import premium ‘sakura’ cherry blossom petals and yuzu peel from Japan, add traditional gin botanicals like juniper and citrus peel, as well as locally sourced green tea leaves and flowers from Westholme Tea Farm to round out the wonderful blend. The flavour experience has been called finely balanced and delicately tuned, with bold upfront citrus notes and a mild earthiness and finish. This gin truly is equal parts West and East, Japan and BC, with a kicker of Vancouver Island terroir bringing it all together.”
The name Kazuki was created by Fitzgerald specifically for this product. KAZU, meaning “harmony” in Japanese, is the blending and respect for both East and West cultures. KI means “radiance” and is an ode to the radiant flavours of the botanicals as they dance on your palate.
