Saseenos artist Amber Lomax currently has an art exhibit called “Hit and Sunk” showing at Xchanges Gallery at 2333 Government Street (Unit 6, upstairs, sorry, not wheelchair accessible). The Gallery is open from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and there’s ample parking available. The show runs until October 20th.
In a series of otherworldly paintings, Lomax explores our connection to our subconscious side and the internal struggle between who we are and who we think we are.
Amber was born in Truro, Great Britain and graduated from Reading University in 2001. Amber has always had a love for art, she studied sculpture at Cardinal Newman Sixth Form College, however it was something that lapsed while she completed her degree and postgraduate training. It was another 10 years before her passion for art was reignited when she began attending a weekly evening class in life drawing. The class ran for 8-week blocks but she stayed with the group for two years!
Moving to Canada in 2010 provided Amber an opportunity for a change in career direction and she now works as an artist from her home in Sooke, BC. Vancouver Island is an exceptionally creative place and Amber has continued her art education, taking classes and workshops with artists from the local community.
Amber is a member of Thrive Mastermind, a group of Island-based artists that meet on a monthly basis to support each other in their art practice. Amber’s work was part of the juried show, Boxed Sanctuary at the Robert Bateman Centre. She has recently been selected by the City of Victoria to participate in a project that brings emerging artists and public art together. An image of her painting ‘The Call’ was displayed at a downtown bus shelter for four months late in 2018. Amber also participates in group shows with several local arts organizations.
She is inspired by imagery from her vivid dream life. Her dream journal provides fuel for painting exploration and the act of painting itself is a dialogue between her conscious and subconscious as each work evolves.
