Outsiders and Others, 716 East Hastings St, Vancouver
Born and raised on Vancouver Island, Bryan Cathcart is a 26 year old first nations self-taught artist living in Sooke, B.C.
Bryan started making art at age 14 where graffiti first grabbed his attention. Then his practice shifted from graffiti to figurative abstraction, and later full abstractions. He began to explore different techniques, styles, and materials. Over time he studied art theory in his spare time and was also introduced to various art forms, artists, and art movements. He simply taught himself what he thought he needed to know.
Recently Bryan has been working with figures again and these are the works we will be showing in this exhibition. These figurative works are focused on expressive lines, shapes, and colours.
“I use various mediums; oil and chalk pastels, acrylics, oils, watercolor, tempera, and house paint, ink, and charcoal, so I can achieve different textures and light. Using various surfaces too, such as canvas, wood panels, glass panels, paper, cardboard, old doors, and metals, helps inform the work. My focus is to create a piece that is both visually and mentally stimulating.”
“I’m a new artist just starting my journey.”
– Bryan Cathcart
Outsiders and Others has shown Bryans work in two groups shows previous to this exhibition. This Is Bryan’s first solo exhibition.
