Sooke at Victoria’s Fringe Fest was captured on video. A father-daughter team from Sooke was one of the many live theatre performances at Victoria’s recent Fringe Festival. John and Zoe Bidner joined a last-minute call for the WorkingClassTheatre show. They performed on September 2, 2015, in a piece called The WorkingClass Cafe: The Last Minute Fringe Show You’ve Always Dreamed Of.
“It started about a month ago when I got a text message from the head of the theatre company I’m in (workingclasstheatre),” explains John Bidner. “They were given an opportunity at the last minute to pick up a slot in the Victoria Fringe Fest after a last minute cancellation. With only three weeks to Fringe, no budget and no rehearsal time or space, workingclasstheatre decided to go simple with a variety show. WorkingClass Cafe was the end result… a showcase of local artists doing everything from burlesque to hula hoop dancing to staged readings of new play.”
John and Zoe are both musically inclined (the Resources below includes a link to John’s original compilations on Sound Cloud), and jumped at the opportunity to perform at the Fringe.[sam id=”15″ codes=”true”]”Zoe and I both play guitar and keyboards (she’s much, much better than me on the latter!) and we both sing, and so we decided to perform a couple of songs for the show,” states John. “Each of the six nights of the WorkingClass Cafe had a different line-up and different themes. Our night was the Music and Movement Night and we opened the show with Fix You by Coldplay.” We’ve included that performance below.
According to their website, WorkingClassTheatre “operates under a mandate to produce the work of emerging artists, produce new Canadian works, and provide training opportunities to performers. We’ve produced work at festivals, in theatres of all shapes and sizes, outdoors, site-specific work; we’ve toured shows and provided actor training and performance opportunities for performers of all skill levels.” Read their About page here.
You may know John Bidner, who acts with the Sooke Harbour Players and has performed in a number of their productions. Links to the Sooke Harbour Players’ website is included in the Resources section below.
Zoe performs Cradlesong
John Bidner on the following piece: “The song I was really looking forward to was Zoe’s take on Cradlesong by Ezra Vine. She had sung this one at a recent camping trip we went on with some friends. I was astounded at how wonderful it sounded and so when we had the opportunity to perform at the Fringe, I told her, ‘you gotta sing Cradlesong!’ The arrangement she played (solo voice with acoustic guitar accompaniment) sounded really good, but I thought I could contribute with a simple bass line, so I wrote a simple accompaniment that I hoped would fill out the low end without getting in the way of the simple beauty of the song.”
Listen for the deeply beautiful calibre of Zoe’s voice in the solo voice performance.
