Continuing on the success of last years’ Sooke Backyard Food Program, Sooke Region Food CHI Society, Transition Sooke, and Sooke Garden Club are once again partnering with the Food Eco District’s MY FED FARM program to help local families grow their own food. https://www.get-fed.ca/myfedfarm.
The program supports families and laid-off workers by providing home-based start-up food gardens using simple and affordable supplies. While the supply chain of food to the island has not been overly impacted by COVID-19, the layoffs and business closures are presenting financial challenges to many families.
Families and individuals applying through the program via the My Fed Farm website will be given 2-5 grow bags with soil, seeds, and seedlings as well as access to local mentorship and online resources. For the seedlings, the participants will be given vouchers to get seedlings of their choice from a local Sooke farm which will help foster connections between residents and our local farmers that are so crucial to our food security.
Last years’ program saw over 40 families being supplied with garden starter kits at no cost to the participants.
