In the spirit of the season
–Brenda Parkinson, Councillor, District of Sooke
The Mayor’s New Year’s Levée has been taking place for years in Sooke. For me, it started back when my father Bob Clark was the Regional Director for the Sooke Electoral Area of the CRD. Bob Clark was a man who valued history and believed in traditions, and he held the first New Year’s Levée when the District of Sooke’s new City Hall/Fire Hall was first built. He was so thrilled to take residents, and family and friends, on a tour of the new facility.
Continuing with his tradition, I have organized the Mayor’s New Year’s Levée for previous mayors of Sooke, Mayor Janet Evans, and Mayor Wendal Milne; this will be the second levée I’ve organized for the current mayor, Mayor Maja Tait.
I believe it is a great tradition to welcome in the New Year and wish everyone the best life has to offer.
Mayor Maja Tait would like to invite all residents, including children, to the “Mayor’s New Year’s Levée”.
The word levée is derived from the French verb “lever” which means to rise (the rising of the sun). French aristocrats used to receive guests in the morning after they had gotten up. British sovereigns held their levées in the early afternoon. Since Lieutenant Governors are the Queen’s representative, they have adopted this custom in Canada.
The Levée is a reception that is normally held on the first day of the New Year. The Mayor’s Levée will be held on Sunday, January 1st, 2017 in the Council Chambers (2225 Otter Point Rd, entrance beside the Fire Station’s office) from 10:00 am – 12:00 Noon.
T’Sou-ke Nation Spiritual Advisor Shirley Alphonse shall be giving the New Year’s Blessing to start of the festivities.
The Sooke Legion will be hosting their Levée from 12:00 Noon – 2:00 pm.
Those attending the Mayor’s Levée will have the opportunity to speak with Mayor Maja Tait, Council, friends and residents, and enjoy light refreshments served by Members of the Sooke District Lioness Club.
Entertainment will be provided by students from the Harmony Project, and the Beatniqs with Janet McTavish.
