What is Sooke Food CHI all about? Farm land preservation, protecting food sheds, strengthening food security, offering mentorships, promoting local markets, buy local, slow foods, supporting our farmers, building community gardens…apple fests, seedy Saturdays, farm tours.[sam_ad id=”130″ codes=”true”]Sooke Region Food CHI Society, a voluntary organization with 250 members, first formed in 2007. Over the years, it has accomplished a lot to support our farmers, increase access to local foods, and encourage others to grow food to get to the table – in the backyard garden or at the Sunriver Community Gardens. On January 28 we our holding our AGM, an opportunity to assess where we are nine years later. There is much our organization still needs to accomplish, working hand in hand with our local governments, members and communities.
Our guest speaker, Ray Zimmerman from the SEA to SEA Greenbelt Society, has spent decades advocating for regional sustainability for our agricultural lands. Ray will share the region’s Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) maps and recent updates for where we are now. Join us in this presentation and be a part of a shared dialogue – what next for our region and the much needed preservation of our limited farm lands. After the inspiring presentation last October 28 — where Harold Steves from the mainland and former ALC chair Richard Bullock spoke to a full house about the continuing need to advocate for our food growing lands — Zimmerman’s presentation is timely and will hopefully encourage more of Sooke’s public to get involved and participate.
We hope to see you there.
