–Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce, media release
On September 2, 2021, The Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce (Chamber), the Sooke Region Tourism Association (SRTA), and WorkLink collectively donated $1,348.65 to the Sooke Food Bank. The funds came entirely from ticket sales to a Cultural Perspectives Workshop presented by Indigenous Perspectives Society (IPS) to the community of Sooke in late May, 2021.
Chamber, SRTA and WorkLink collectively sponsored the training session in Sooke and opened it up to all community members. It quickly sold out.
The Sooke Region Chamber identified the need to build cultural competency and increase knowledge of Indigenous history, issues, and perspectives. The Chamber teamed up with WorkLink and SRTA, and brought the Indigenous Perspectives Society’s (IPS) Cultural Perspectives Training to Sooke. This workshop served as starting step in giving Sooke leaders highest level of cultural competence to meet their cultural mandates successfully and effectively.
The Sooke Food Bank was identified as the recipient of the donation, as they serve the greater community all the way to Port Renfrew, and they have hot meal programs at the local schools. The Food Bank is open the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Thursdays of each month, where they provide food to individuals and families from Sooke to Port Renfrew. The Sooke Food Bank is largely organized and operated through the hard work of volunteers and the kindness of the community. The Sooke Food Bank also contributes to providing hot meals to local schools.
