Sooke Harbour Resort & Marina, a True Key Hotels & Resorts managed property, is pleased to announce that a temporary salmon pen for 200,000 Chinook salmon smolts from the Nitinat Hatchery and 100,000 from the Goldstream Hatchery has been successfully installed at the Resort’s marina as of April 27, 2017.
“We’re excited to be hosting a very different type of guest during the month of May,” says General Manager Nigel Keatley, “The temporary pens are sure to attract interest from residents and guests alike. We are proud to be part of this effort to out-plant these Chinook smolts for the local killer whale population.”
It is expected that the 300,000 smolts will stay in the pen until about May 21, 2017 when they will be released to eventually provide additional food for Vancouver Island’s endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. These whales prefer to eat large adult Chinook salmon of which there are dwindling numbers to be found in the Sooke Basin and Juan de Fuca Strait near Sooke. These smolts will grow to become a critical source of food for the endangered whales but also provide more fishing opportunity as well as eco-toursism for the Sooke community as a whole.
