On the evening of July 11, 2021 at approximately 5:30 p.m., the Sooke RCMP received a report of a Robbery in progress at a liquor store located in the 6800 Block of West Coast Road, Sooke, B.C. An employee of the business advised police that an adult male entered and stole three bottles of wine. The staff attempted to stop the male as he left the store. When confronted by the staff member, the male brandished a two-foot sword and swung it at employees prior to fleeing the scene on foot.
Staff called 9-1-1 and followed from a safe distance in a vehicle, directing police to the male in the 6900 block of West Coast Road. Sooke RCMP Frontline members engaged with the male who was non-compliant with police direction. The male was eventually taken into custody and found to still be in possession of the stolen items and the weapon.
This was a dangerous situation that fortunately resulted in the safe arrest of the suspect by police without anyone being hurt says Sergeant Kevin Shaw, sergeant in charge of operations at the Sooke RCMP Detachment,
in situations like these, we always recommend to call the police immediately and then, only if safe to do so, provide us with updates of the suspect from a safe place. As evidenced here, what appears to be a minor incident can rapidly turn violent without warning. That’s what we are here to deal with.
A Robbery charge has been recommended to the crown. The Sooke RCMP would like to thank the efforts of the public that led to quickly locating and arresting the suspect. Police are requesting anyone with information on this situation to please contact the Sooke RCMP Detachment at 250-642-5241 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.
