Thinking of running for Council? Characteristics of Effective Locally Elected Officials (Video 1/5) — 9 Comments

  1. I am very happy with Mayor Maija Tait. She will easily retain my vote this coming election cycle. I do think however that it is time to turnover some of the longest sitting councilors. Sooke is slowly coming into the modern Era,and speaking in broad general tones, the politicians who have been on the radar since I was a kid in the 80’s probably need to let a new generation take on the challenges of 2018 and beyond.

    • absolutely nothing against seniors in general, my favourite person on the planet is a senior and she has won two silver medals at the Canada Seniors Games in back to back years. Love her and respect her. I was trying to not mention the name of the fellow who has had his day in the sun and I would hope would retire from politics this time around. In any event he won’t be getting my vote as I urge Sooke to bring in some youthful input to council this coming election.

    • That sounds ageist to feel that just because someone has been around awhile they no longer have anything to contribute. You would think that someone who has had experience would have a lot to offer. I agree youthful input is desirable as well. Too many newbies however and then you have a group of people who know nothing of the history and potential to get led around by the nose by staff or others. A balance of experience and fresh ideas and the opportunity for mentorship is a great combination.

    • My issue with career politicians sliding into and staying on small city councils rests with the other ‘edge’ of the sword …sure they have all the skillsets to be decent local politicians but they also have all the skillsets to take advantage of their positions as ‘career politicians’ are wont to do. I can simply point to RIck’s expense account being the highest of every Sooke Council member, including the MAYOR! Time for fresh thoughts rather than an old shirt and tie at the trough.

    • and if career politicians are your issue then I suggest you also look at the Mayor. She’s been elected for 10 years and makes no secret of the fact that she wants to move on and Sooke is merely a stepping stone to her aspirations.
