Doing it in style, the Sooke Region Volunteer Centre is hosting its first Senior Volunteer Appreciation Event with a Mock-Tail Party.[sam_ad id=”58″ codes=”true”]With this event, SRVC wishes to celebrate and acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our Senior Volunteers. In this case senior refers to active volunteers 65+ years and older, as well as volunteers with 20 years or more active community engagement. We are hosting a Senior Volunteer Appreciation Mock-tail Party on Saturday, June 13, 2015 from 1:00 – 3:00 in the Sooke Community Hall. The Mocktail Party will be hosted upstairs, and the elevator will be properly manned to assist people with mobility issues.
The RSVP deadline has been extended until June 8, 2015. Click their ad for additional information, or see the Resources below.
Many of the volunteer organization serve seniors, both directly and through inter-generational activities. The main senior’s serving organizations are:
- Ayre Manor
- Contact Community Assistance Society (Loan cupboard & drivers)
- Sooke Seniors Activity Society (bus)
- Seniors Drop-in Centre
- Sooke Elderly Citizens Housing Society
- Sooke Meals on Wheels Society
“All of these are run almost exclusively by older seniors,” notes Marlene Barry, SRVC Coordinator. “The BC Pensions & Seniors Org, Sooke Branch #88, recently folded after their 50th anniversary due to being unable to attract new people to the board. All of these groups are at risk of the same thing happening over the next few years.”
The Sooke Region Volunteer Centre’s “Recruit, Retain and Retrain” project is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program. We are aware that many not-for-profit organizations in our region are run by seniors.
The SRVC has over 180 non-profit organizations in the Sooke Region. The Sooke Community Association is the longest running society, beginning in the late 1920’s or early 1930’s and incorporated in 1935. Other groups like the Sooke Angels Society incorporated this year.
The Sooke Region Volunteer Centre wants to celebrate and appreciate everything seniors do for the Sooke region and this is their small way of saying thank you!
