Sooke Farm Tour set for Sunday, July 19
Come experience “hands-on farming for a day”! Meet regional growers on their home turf, see what they do best and walk away with the freshest picks of the season while visiting a colourful mix of new and historic farms.
A collection of remarkable local farmgates will again swing open to the public on Sunday, July 19 as the Sooke Region Food CHI Society presents its fourth Farm Tour from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine.
The ticketed, self-guided fundraiser features 9 bountiful working farms in serene, picturesque West Shore settings. Participants will meet some of the Sooke region’s busiest and friendliest farmers, and have the opportunity to take part in farm activities for children and adults alike. They will see what makes these farm operations unique while learning about food gardening and sustainable production systems.
“It’s a great day out for anyone interested in the farming workstyle and life behind the scenes,” says volunteer Keeley Nixon, one of Sooke Region Food CHI’s directors and a farmer herself at Otter Point’s ALM Farm. “Our hosts will be highlighting their passion and what their farm brings to the community as well as the challenges they face”. Activities will range from seed saving, veggie and herb identification, soil blocking and kid friendly activities. Whether it is seed production, permaculture, or how a farm set up to be family-centered can also be enormously productive, Farm Tour 2015 is the opportunity for the public to learn about the dynamic life of farmers in this region.[sam id=”5″ codes=”true”]Tour stops in 2015 stretch east from Eagle Paws Organics as far west as Silver Cloud Farm on the border between Shirley and Otter Point. Everyone is invited to bring a stack of shopping bags to carry home fruit, veggies and other tasty takeaway products available for purchase at the height of the growing season.
Tickets ($15 per adult; free for kids 12 and under) will be available starting in mid June at various locations in Sooke and Victoria, with funds raised going to support local agriculture initiatives.
