The following updates are from BC Wildfire Service on Facebook, beginning first with Vancouver Island.
On northern Vancouver Island, north of Highway 28, there are currently 59 active fires started by lightning. The fires are prioritized by the risk they pose to people, property and infrastructure.
In total, we have 104 firefighters and 12 support staff in the area working on these fires. Today, crews actioned 11 of the fires.
The fire burning near the outskirts of the Village of Zeballos is proving challenging. The fire is burning in very steep ground with extremely difficult and unsafe access for firefighting and our priority continues to focus on the safety of first responders and the public. Due to winds and high temperatures, the fire is slowly backing down the steep slope.
This fire is highly visible to the people in the Village of Zeballos and we understand their concerns and are working hard to keep the community safe.
The local government has implemented an Evacuation Alert for homes in the area east of the Zeballos River (on the town side).
The alert can be viewed on this website: www.zeballos.com. While the fire is not an immediate threat, in discussions with the BC Wildfire Service, local government chose to issue an alert to its citizens.
