Otter Point Volunteer Fire Department held its annual appreciation and awards event this month. This is the district’s opportunity to say thanks to the men and women of our department. We are pleased to announce that the following members were honoured this month for their years of service to Otter Point Volunteer Fire Department and the Otter Point community.
The Canadian Fire Services Exemplary Service medal is awarded by the Governor General of Canada in recognition of 20 years of meritorious service to public security in Canada. We were pleased to present this award to Captain John McCrea who completed 20 years of service to the community of Otter Point. During this time John served as Fire Fighter, Captain, and even as Fire Chief for a period. He continues today as a Captain and Training Officer.
The British Columbia Provincial Fire Services Long Service Medal in recognition of 25 years service was awarded to Fire Fighter Ron Morton. During his time here, Ron also served as Captain before stepping back to Fire Fighter rank. Ron continues to step up to help where ever he is needed.[sam id=”15″ codes=”true”]The British Columbia Provincial Fire Services Long Service bar in recognition of 35 years service was awarded to Fire Fighter Dave Gollmer. During his time here, Dave also served as Captain for number of years before stepping back to Fire Fighter rank. Dave was instrumental in implementing our driver/pump operator training program and continues to head up that program.
An Otter Point Fire 35 year service pin was awarded to Commissioner (Trustee) Harold Melville. Harold started out as a fire fighter and then transitioned to becoming a member of the Otter Point Fire Commission where he continues to serve our community.
An Otter Point Fire 5 year service pin was presented to Fire Fighter Clay Fischer.
An Otter Point Fire 5 year service pin was presented to Fire Fighter Zach LaFontaine.
As well, the following promotions took effect this month:
- Alastair Davy-Saxl was promoted to Lieutenant.
- John Steffan was promoted from Lieutenant to Captain.
- Steve Whitmore was promoted from Lieutenant to Captain.
On occasion, the department will recognize a member or two for extraordinary contributions to the department in time and effort during the past year. This year John Steffan and Steve Whitmore were recognized and presented with gifts certificates in appreciation.
