On November 5th, 2019 at approximately 4:39 pm the West Shore RCMP investigated a report of 2016 Mazda CX5 that had just crashed into the utility pole located on the 2800 block of Sooke Rd in Langford.
An off-duty West Shore RCMP officer witnessed the vehicle swerving on Sooke Rd approaching Slegg Lumber. The vehicle first crashed into the radar operated speed sign near this location and then went into the oncoming lane before overcorrecting again and crashing into the utility pole.
The driver was identified as a 53-year-old woman who was taken to the hospital for injuries. An impaired driving investigation is underway as police believed the woman was intoxicated by alcohol at the time.
“Another off-duty West Shore RCMP officer was driving on Sooke Rd in the opposite direction at the time, [and] she stated that the vehicle came into her lane and narrowly missed a head-on collision with her,” said Cst. Nancy Saggar, West Shore RCMP Media Relations Officer. “The officer is six months pregnant [and] was driving with her toddler at the time. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Given the driving behaviour, it’s amazing [the alleged intoxicated driver] did not hit a vehicle or a pedestrian.”
