On November 25, 2021, the West Shore RCMP Municipal Traffic Section did a winter tire check on Bear Mountain Parkway in Langford. During this operation, over 150 vehicles were checked and 8 written warnings were issued.
“On designated roadways, such as the Malahat and Bear Mountain Parkway above Bishops Gate, passenger vehicles are required to have a winter designated tire and trucks are required to carry chains from October 1st to March 31st”, says Cpl. Mike Jacobson of the West Shore RCMP Municipal Traffic Section.
“A winter designated tire will display the letters
M+S, or display a symbol of a three peaked mountain and a snowflake within it, on the sidewall. The tire must also have a minimum tread depth of 3.5 mm.”
Mountain-Snowflake tires provide better traction than M+S tires below temperatures of 7 degrees Celsius, in icy conditions, and in snow. Mountain-Snowflake tires are recommended for optimal safety in the winter months.
