River Otter
Lutra Canadensis
BC Conservation Data Centre: Yellow
Did you know?
- They have nostrils and ears that close in the water
- They can hold their breath underwater for about 8 minutes
- Their diet consists of fish, eggs, amphibians, turtles, and crustaceans
- Baby otters are called “pups”!
The otters you see playing on the rocks off Vancouver Island are actually river otters adapted to living in salt water!
Using their long whiskers, river otters can detect prey in dark, murky waters.
